All of you in this amazing DIY looping community around the world have lived with Katie's extraordinary efforts, in developing the original LoopDocs and LoopTips, teaching thousands of T1Ds and parents of T1Ds how to build and use Loop (and even how to restart sensors), spending incalculable hours helping loopers, at all hours of the day and night, and always ready to step up. I met Katie in the early days, over 6 years ago, at the premiere of Luke and Jedi, a documentary about a 6-year-old boy and his diabetes alert dog. I was more excited to give her a hug than if she had been even the Dalai Lama (or about the same, maybe). I sat next to Jedi through the film and then joined in a tiny session to discuss looping... and got to see Jedi signal me for a dropping BG. What a day! Katie has been an amazing "reporter" of her significant journeys in life: looping (with her T1D daughter, Anna), a wow fitness regimen during covid, Holly's triumph in high school and college swimming... and sadly, most recently, her unwanted diagnosis of terminal brain cancer. All this by age 49. Her words have been so profound... purely lessons in life as well as simply how to live while on the unstoppable path to dying. I continue to learn from Katie, her amazing husband Jason's dedication, a family and community that supported her journey. Just all of it. It is overwhelming and still so very remarkable. Thank you, Katie, for everything. With forever gratitude and love! (These are the words of our founder, Joanne Milo, but they reflect the sentiment of the entire DIY community.)
